Qi Men Dun Jia
Ancient imperial science for strategic decisions
How do you set up a Qimen Dunjia chart (起局)?
Setting up a Qimen Dunjia chart begins by dividing the year into Yang and Yin palaces by solar term: Yang after the summer solstice, Yin after the winter solstice, yielding 18 boards of nine each. First determine the current board (e.g. Yang 4 or Yin 7) using the intercalation or split-and-fill method. Next lay the Earth Plate: from Palace 1 (Kan) place the six instruments (戊己庚辛壬癸) and three wonders (乙丙丁) in order. Then find the hourly stem group leader (旬首); its palace star becomes the Value Star (值符) and its door the Value Door (值使). The Value Star moves with the heavenly stem to the Heaven Plate, the Value Door moves with the earthly branch to the Human Plate, and the nine stars and eight doors follow. Finally place the eight spirits on the Heaven Plate. The modern split-and-fill method keys the board to the daily stem, simpler and closer to the heavens.
