Liu Yao Divination
Divine good or ill fortune through hexagrams
How is a Liuyao (six-line) hexagram actually cast?
A Liuyao reading uses three coins shaken in the hands and tossed six times. Each toss sets one line by the coins' backing: three backs is Old Yang (a changing line), three characters Old Yin (changing), one back Young Yang, two backs Young Yin — building the hexagram from the bottom line upward. Next comes Na Jia: by the eight pure trigrams' rhyme the lines receive earthly branches and elements. Then the Self and Other lines (世应) are placed, the six kin (wealth, official, offspring, parent, sibling) derived from element relations, the six spirits attached, and the changed hexagram drawn from moving lines. Judgment reads the vigor of the relevant symbol, the movements' births and clashes, and the Self–Other relation. The method is recorded in 《增删卜易》 and 《卜筮正宗》; cast with a single focused question for reliability.
